Day 12

Irons in the fire

Until now the underground was mostly a place to dig through. You could mine dirt and stone, dodge the occasional zombie hand in the dark, and that was it. There was no real reason to go deeper than you had to. That always felt wrong for a mining game, so this round became all about the forge. Time to strike while the iron is hot. Literally, because now there is iron, and there is a forge.

The anvil works

The centerpiece is a new world object: an anvil you can walk up to and use. Standing next to it opens the crafting dialog, and suddenly all those resources in your bags have a purpose. The sign next to it keeps the interaction honest: it only works within reach, so no smithing from across the map.

From ore to gear

The loop that grew around it is the one I always wanted: mine iron ore underground, chop pines for timber, carry everything home in the mining and timbering bags, and turn it into something at the anvil. A copper pickaxe digs faster, an axe makes tree felling less of a chore, and the simple longsword gives you something to swing when the cave gets crowded.

The big step this session was steel armor. Helmet, chest, legs and arm pieces exist as items with their own JSON configs, and they render as proper avatar layers. That sounds trivial, but armor layering was its own little adventure: the helmet has to sit over the head, the chest stacks on the body, and the armored arms need separate frames for walking, jumping and the mining swing. Get one offset wrong and the character looks like he is wearing armor from a parallel universe.

A reason to go down

Here is the part I like most: the equipment you craft is not just cosmetic. The world below the surface is genuinely dangerous now. The fog of darkness hides zombie hands, light is a limited resource, and every tile deeper is one you have not seen. With a longsword and a steel chest piece, that trip stops being suicide and starts being a plan.

That closes a loop I have been circling for days: surface for wood and farming, underground for ore, and the anvil as the place where the two worlds meet. Gear up, bring a torch, and see how deep you get. I will keep pushing downward too, follow along if you like.
